Stereo Miking

Stereo miking is often preferred for many applications such as recording drums, percussion, piano, strings and horn sections, vocal ensembles, and sometimes acoustic guitar (depending on how large a role it’s playing and how much space there is the arrangement). While there are a lot of different, useful techniques, here are four in particular that I use most often:

• XY

• Near XY

• Spaced pair

• Blumlein

XY, or coincident pair, is arguably the most reliable stereo miking technique for a couple of reasons. First of all, it yields excellent phase coherence; secondly, it provides a natural-sounding stereo image. With drums, I will often use XY when I want to hear the entire drum kit through the overhead mics.
